To inspire family travel outdoors. We aim to push the boundaries a bit past what’s easy and show every family that these expeditions are replicable. We want to help your family have similar adventures.

People and Places

To connect families with places, people, and landscapes, creating a sense of place and stewardship. “Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.” (Aristotle)

Experts

To bring an “expert” component to every expedition, whether that’s a hike with a scientist, looking at paintings from artists dedicated to the areas we visit, or chatting with locals willing to share their stories of place.

Our Story

Meet the families of The Family Expedition Project

The Lighthisers

Erica, Mark, Eva, Clara, Emmett

The Lighthisers home base is on a windy slope overlooking the Yellowstone in Montana. Erica is a conservationist and Mark works at a local outdoor store. They have three tough kids that are up for just about anything... especially if there are buddies involved. Their family thrives on type II adventure. Whether it’s bicycle touring across multiple states or building their own off-grid home; when tackling big projects they are living the best versions of themselves.

The Harrisons

Anders, Melynda, Finn, Henry

The Harrisons have been writing, photographing, and creating films about family travel and outdoor recreation for more than ten years. Mel is a freelance writer and travel blogger, and Henry is a filmmaker. Together with their two sons, they prioritize travel and outdoor adventure. In 2016, they sold their house and most of their stuff to spend a year traveling in Europe. Today, they spend half their time in Montana and half their time exploring the world.
